Senior managers at global headquarters are often thrown into a role where they inherit remote employees, and simply don’t know how to manage them. Managing someone in your office and managing someone halfway across the world, takes a completely different set of management skills and techniques. Unfortunately, most managers rarely get training in this area and the ones who suffer most, tend to be the remote employees. Cultural differences, language, and history of a country, are all important elements when it comes to conducting business in a global environment.
The Culture Map: Breaking Through the Invisible Boundaries of Global Business by Erin Meyer – This is another great book that will teach you a lot about navigating the global work environment. It’s more general than the previous book I mentioned with examples of doing business with just about everyone. However, a very interesting read, whether you work in a global environment or not. Even if you are just curious to learn about other cultures.
